Witham Hall School

Witham Hall School

Prolite’s latest project has been to design and install a permanent lighting system, optically designed for sports, to illuminate the new 4 court area at Witham Hall school.

Witham Hall is a co-educational day and boarding school situated in Witham on the Hill in Lincolnshire. Set within a stunning Queen Anne mansion and surrounded by parkland and gardens, Witham Hall prides itself in providing a holistic education that enables every child to reach their potential in all areas of their education including on the sports pitches.

The Requirement:

The Ritelite projects team were challenged to specify and install a completely new lighting solution for Witham Hall’s recently built sports complex’s quad tennis court area.

After a full site evaluation, light modelling and initial site testing it was determined that the specification of the new lighting system needed to be close to the Lawn Tennis Association’s specification for tennis court lighting.

The Solution:

To reach the design brief and achieve the full lighting potential on this sized area the Prolite design team created a new product. The team took an existing light in the Prolite range that has been optically designed for sports and designed and developed new bracketry for this specific installation to minimise glare and light pollution and create instant, even daylight lighting across all 4 courts.

To help minimise disruption to the students education and in preparation for the new term starting in September, the Prolite Projects team took the opportunity to carry out the installation work during the Summer holidays. The installation team liaised with the school’s electrical team to successfully organise cabling required for the installation and installed the floodlights via laser setup guides. The installation work included digging trenches, laying cables and installing bespoke coloured lighting columns to match the schools current fencing and netting hardware.

Luke Graham, Bursar and Sam Willis, Head of Sports are delighted with the results!

“Prolite Projects did an excellent job both in understanding the necessary spec of the project and in advising how to implement the installation as seamlessly as possible. From a myriad of possible options, we felt well guided and, while we deliberated over the various options, their willingness to explore all possible options was invaluable. The result is a highly professional job and a sporting facility that is far beyond what we could have expected.” – Luke O.T. Graham, Bursar

Bourne Lawn Tennis Club

Bourne Lawn Tennis Club is one of the largest tennis clubs in the area, with over 200 members and spacious facilities including 5 grass courts and three all-weather courts.  Bourne Lawn Tennis Club offers a friendly, thriving club in the peaceful setting of Abbey Lawns in Bourne, Lincolnshire. Open to members of all ages and abilities for social play and competitive tennis, the club recently approached Prolite for assistance with upgrading the current lighting system on the all-weather courts to LED.

The Requirement:

The Prolite projects team were challenged to provide a new LED lighting system that would significantly raise the LUX levels on the courts from current levels. The 15 year old lighting system in place was power hungry metal halide lighting that offered a very low colour rendition and quality of light to the courts. Tracking the ball when in play was proving difficult to the members of the club with concerns raised about the light levels further deteriorating during the coming winter.

Michael Speakman, Bourne Lawn Tennis Club’s Chairman, was passionate about finding a long-term, sustainable, energy-efficient solution that would vastly increase LUX levels on the courts as part of a joint re-surface and painting project to transform the current experience for members.

After a full site evaluation, light modelling and initial site testing, the Prolite Projects team carefully specified multiple, highly efficient LED Sport lighting products from the Prolite Lamps range to recommend for installation at the site.

These luminaires combine highly efficient, high output LED’s with state-of-the-art asymmetric lensing to prevent both upward light spillage as well as glare on the courts. Light spillage / pollution onto surrounding areas was a concern that had been raised by local residents so the Prolite team addressed this in some detail with local council members to reassure them the result would be satisfactory.

In addition to specifying the new lighting solution for the courts, the Prolite project team also helped the club through the local planning process to enable them to install lights on 1 of the 3 courts that were not currently lit. This was successfully granted and lighting on all 3 of the clubs all-weather courts was signed off to be lit to an LTA standard.

The Solution:

The previous Metal Halide lighting system was replaced on the 2 existing courts and 6 new masts were installed on the one court that previously didn’t have any lighting.

Once the fittings and planning had been approved an installation plan was devised by the Ritelite / Prolite Projects team to help minimise disruption to the club’s operational times. This plan included the critical setup process of the light heads, optimising light levels for the courts ongoing.

The final results met and exceeded expectations. The LUX on the PPA was improved by more than 4x the Metal Halide system and the high quality white light provided creates a much better play environment for players. The unique asymmetrical design has ensured that all the light is focused on the playing surface with very low light spill outside the courts.

The feedback from the club has been fantastic!

‘I would have no hesitation in recommending Prolite. From the moment we first contacted them to the day the job was completed they have acted with total professionalism. We are delighted with the installation on all three of our hard courts and the lighting pattern and light produced from the new floodlights will make it seem as though you are playing tennis in daylight. The job was completed on time and within budget and they were quick to adapt when changes were required. ‘ – Michael Speakman, Chairman

Overview:

Stamford Tennis Club are one of the largest tennis clubs in Lincolnshire, with over 370 members that share the use of 7 all-weather courts with Stamford School.

The 14-year-old lighting system that was originally in place at the courts were power hungry sodium floodlights that offered very low colour rendition and overall quality of light to the courts. This meant that tracking the ball when in play was proving difficult for the court users.

The Requirement:

Graham Winestone, Stamford Tennis Club House Manager, was passionate about finding a unique, long-term, sustainable solution that would improve lighting levels over the court areas in a joint resurfacing revamp project.

The challenge that was brought to the Prolite Projects team was how to raise the LUX levels significantly above the old system to achieve the required LTA lighting level standards.

After a full site evaluation, light modelling and initial site testing, the Prolite Projects team carefully selected multiple, highly efficient LED Sport products from the Prolite range to recommend for installation at the site.

These luminaires combine highly efficient, high output LED’s with state-of-the-art asymmetric lensing to prevent both upward light spillage as well as glare on the courts.

The Solution:

Once the fittings had been approved an installation plan was devised by the Prolite Projects team to help minimise disruption to the club’s operational times. This plan included the critical setup process of the light heads, optimising light levels for the courts ongoing.
The final results met and exceeded expectations. The LUX on the PPA was improved by more than double from 247 LUX to over 570 LUX (within the PPA areas) and the high quality white light provided creates a much better environment for players.
